Problem Definition for Product Managers
Every great solution stems from a well defined problem. Let me tell you a little story. I left home several years ago, and for the first few years, I wasn’t keeping up with my family. I could go on for months without saying hello. Yes, I know, it’s bad.
I knew I needed to fix this; to foster good communication, know what is happening and the general well-being of everyone.
Here’s a Problem Definition for my case: Poor communication with my immediate family members has resulted in a lack of awareness about important information and the general well being of parents.
This addressed important aspects of problem definition
What is the problem? Poor communication with my immediate family members
Who are we solving it for? Myself
Why is it important to solve it now? I realized family is an important part of our lives and I was missing it.
How might we validate that we’ve actually solved the problem? I know important information at any given time and general well being of my parents
Problem definition refers to the process of clearly and precisely identifying and stating the problem that needs to be solved. The problem definition should be concise, specific, and accurately reflect the issue at hand. It should also take into consideration the context and constraints that may impact the solution.
Having a well-defined problem definition is important as it helps to ensure that the solution addresses the root cause of the problem and provides a clear direction for the problem-solving process. It also helps to ensure that everyone involved in the problem-solving process is working towards a common goal and shipping the right features or products.
But defining the problem is the very first step to problem-solving….. to be continued
